I have a barrow about 9 months old that was born with brown eyes, but in the past two months his eyes have turned a light blue, almost white. He appears to be able to see, blinks and is aware of where things are. What would cause this? Has anybody had this on their farm.

    ???

Could it be cataracts? I did some research on Google but could find NOTHING on cataracts in pigs BUT did find this article about cataracts in dogs describing the symptoms. http://www.petwave.com/Dogs/Dog-Health-Center/Ear-and-Eye-Disorders/Cataracts/Symptoms.aspx Does this sound like what your pig has?

I guess most of us never see the eyes of our pigs due to their floppy ears. Please let us know if you find out info from elsewhere about this.

No, I don’t think it is cataracts. The eyes are not cloudy at all, they are very clear. Pupils are clear. I thought at first it may have been pink eye, but I don’t think that is it either. It wouldn’t be as strange if he had been born with them, but for them to turn the way they did seems unusual. Also I love to look at their eyes, they are so gentle and intelligent! The way they flop over for a belly-rub is a great time to look at overall health as well.

Thanks for the research Liz. I will let you know if I find anything else. Maybe others have seen this.

Could you send us a picture of the pig? It would be great to see those blue eyes if for no other reason than to admire them. Perhaps another member would be able to see the picture and identify the issue.

    Thank you
