How often do you guys suggest breeding sows? I’ve heard opinions arguing for both options, and was wondering what the Large Black community thinks! Thank you!!

Pigs are designed to be kept bred just like goats & sheep. It is not advisable to give them a break. We have done it thinking we were being kind & the sow took nearly two years to farrow again! Ouch!
Giving them a break seems to upset their hormones/fertility. If they get too much fat on their ovaries it can really cause a problem.
We have another sow here now who the owners gave her a break & she has not farrowed since last June. She is only 2 so not an old sow. We are hoping that we can get her bred as she is a very nice looking Large Black but time will tell. She is a little overweight so hoping to slim her down also.
SO my two cents worth is to rebreed the sow as soon as the piglets are weaned 🙂 That means you will get 2 litters a year.
Now sometimes they will not take the first heat after weaning – depends on their body condition BUT if the boar is left with the sow he will keep breeding her until the job is done 🙂

I agree with you, Liz. If a female of any kind is not in good condition, she most likely won’t settle anyway and if she is in good shape, it’s better for her to be bred than not. That is what nature intended for them and if we’re breeding as naturally as possible, I believe that is the best way. I get tired of hearing folks who aren’t familiar with animal husbandry say animals are ‘forced to breed until they’re worn out’. If they are fed and cared for correctly they won’t ‘wear out’, but will have a long, healthy breeding life. This is not just my opinion but has been proven by scientific fact. A very good question, Amy!March 10, 2012 at 9:49 am #17734Member: MO

Our sow just farrowed for her first time and I was also wondering about rebreeding. How long do most people wait to wean the piglets, and how soon after that do the sows generally go back in to heat?
Millview Farms, OntarioFebruary 2, 2013 at 3:06 am #18346
You should wean the piglets after about 8 weeks. If they are very large then 7 weeks would be fine. Some people wean even earlier, but that is not a good idea – the piglets need the extra they get from their mother.
Once the piglets are weaned put the sow in with the boar, you can even put her and the piglets in with him before if you like but he will get too fat on the extra you are feeding the sow for milk production. A sow will not normally come into heat until 3-10 days after weaning. We’ve noticed usually 3 days. We did have one sow that would cycle 3 weeks after farrowing, but that’s not usual.
Hope that helps.
